| After
catching a boatload of bass, Captain Alex brings us back in and lands
on an obscure part of the beach. Turns out, unbeknownst to us, we'd
been illegally catching totuava--black sea bass--an endangered
species. Chuck wanted his picture taken with his biggest fish, but
Alex didn't want any evidence. They compromised. Alex said Chuck could
have his picture taken if you couldn't actually see the fish. |

 |
A
friend of Alex's came down to the beach in his pickup and we quickly loaded
our fish and got the hell out of there. We ended up at Alex's mother's
house--where we were invited for dinner that night. She offered to cook
up a mess of our fish and throw a party. |
| We
hung around while Alex's friend filleted all the fish... |
 |
 |
...then
went back to the hotel to rest up before dinner. After some discussion
on the balcony, Bart and Mark decided to go down to the pool for a
dip. |
| Because
the hotel was so empty, however, one of the staff was using the pool for
a private swim. She offered to get dressed and leave, or, better yet,
she said, we could join her. But we didn't want to intrude so we excused
ourselves... |
 |
 |
...and
went down to the beach instead. The water was a little cool, but nice. |
| We
stayed until after the sun set, then headed on over to Alex's mother's
house for dinner. Fifteen people showed up for a huge meal and everybody
agreed we had caught some damn good fish. |
